My Role

My Role

In this project, I worked closely with the product manager, and together, we formed a small task force to build the project from scratch in just two months, armed with nothing but a vague concept.

As the product designer, my responsibilities included ideating, designing, and validating the concept.

The Problem

The Problem

Salespeople require an effortless tool that enables them to differentiate themselves in front of their targets, generate compelling emails resulting in higher click rates, and assist in analyzing and prioritizing the most promising prospects.

User Research

Kaltura Pitch was a completely new addition to Kaltura's extensive video offerings. To begin, our first priority was defining our target audience and gaining a comprehensive understanding of their needs and pain points.

Once we established our target audience, I conducted a thorough competitor analysis by testing and evaluating other video solutions that shared similar concepts. This allowed me to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each tool and find an improved solution for our specific problem.

Once we established our target audience, I conducted a thorough competitor analysis by testing and evaluating other video solutions that shared similar concepts. This allowed me to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each tool and find an improved solution for our specific problem.

Initially, we assumed that creating either a chrome extension or a mobile app would be the most convenient way for users to record their videos. Based on this assumption, I analyzed various chrome extensions such as Soapbox, Loom, and Wistia, while also drawing inspiration from mobile apps like Instagram, Snapchat, and Clips.

To validate our assumptions and gain deeper insights into the problem, we also conducted interviews with salespeople from different partner organizations we collaborated with.

Key takeaways

Following my research I've identified a couple of key takeaways that helped me shape the way the product look

Video recording should be fast and intuitive
UI should be as simple and familiar
Personalized videos gain higher open rate

Chapter Three

Concept Check

Initially, our idea was to develop the tool as a mobile app to provide users with the convenience of on-the-go usage. However, upon further investigation, we realized that it would be more beneficial as a web-based tool since our target personas primarily rely on email communication through web platforms. Before finalizing our decision, I explored several solutions and user flows specifically for the mobile version, which you can find below.

Designing the mobile version of this platform posed significant challenges, as video editing involves multiple complex layers that may be difficult to execute on mobile devices. Although the design for the mobile version ultimately ended up in my archive, it was an intriguing and insightful process that greatly stimulated my creative thinking.

Filling the screen with pixels

Filling the screen with pixels

During my work on Kaltura Pitch, I followed a comprehensive UX design process to ensure a user-centered and intuitive product. This process typically involved several stages, including user research, where I sought to understand the target audience, their needs, and pain points. This was followed by ideation and concept development, where I generated multiple design ideas and solutions. Next, I created prototypes to visualize the user interface and interactions. Through iterative testing and feedback, I refined the designs, focusing on usability, accessibility, and visual appeal.

In terms of design, the first aspect I focused on was the video and email process, as it constitutes the main workflow that users will engage with the most. My aim was to create a sleek and modern aesthetic, drawing inspiration from popular video-centric apps such as Instagram and Snapchat. To facilitate ease of access, I designed this process as a floating module, enabling users to access it from anywhere within the product, promoting a lightweight and efficient experience.

For the visual elements, I opted for light colors and elegant typography, ensuring that the content remains the primary focal point. I incorporated icons and illustrations to inject a sense of fun. To promote consistency and facilitate collaboration with other designers and developers, I created a UI framework to establish a cohesive and streamlined workflow. The layout of the pages followed a card-like style, which enhanced visual separation between different sections and aided users in focusing on specific parts of the page at a time.

Dive into details

New Video Message

The creation flow of a new video is the central and pivotal component of this product, as recording and sending personalized videos form its core functionality. With that in mind, my primary focus was on designing and optimizing this flow, exploring various solutions as showcased in the concepts chapter. Throughout the design process, my guiding principles were ease of use and efficiency in video creation time.

Media Library

In the Media Library, users can access a collection of videos they have previously created, as well as videos shared by their teammates and saved playlists from other Kaltura products.

Within the Media Library, users have the ability to organize their videos into playlists, analyze their performance and statistics, and easily share them either directly or through email.

My Messages

"My Messages" serves as the user landing page and the primary screen within the product. Here, users can view the messages they have sent, analyze the associated statistics, re-share them, access the content of the messages, track their activity, and plan future actions based on the available information.

Onboarding

The primary objective of the onboarding process is to assist users in configuring essential settings and inputting their information, such as their name, position, and company logo. This information is then consistently displayed in their videos, landing pages, and emails. The underlying concept is to encourage users to set up their information once and save time during their regular usage of the product.

Final Toughts

Final Toughts

Working on this product was both challenging and exhilarating as it presented unique difficulties compared to redesigning or working on an existing product. It required delving deeper into understanding the users and their specific needs.

Two months into the development, I made the decision to leave Kaltura to pursue new opportunities. Therefore, I do not have access to real-time data regarding the results and performance of the choices I made. However, I was thrilled to discover, upon visiting Kaltura's website, that even after six years since my initial design, the majority of the decisions I implemented remain unchanged. This could potentially indicate that the product has achieved success in its performance.
